Cervicogenic Headaches

Did you know that physical therapists treat headaches? Most people don’t! Cervicogenic headaches are headaches that originate from issues in the cervical spine (neck) in which the symptoms radiate into the head. They are often caused by stiffness in the upper cervical spine, poor posture, and a history of neck injuries. These types of headaches are frequently misdiagnosed as migraines. I have suffered from undiagnosed cervicogenic headaches myself. I went to see a neurologist for my migraines and he was very conservative (which I am deeply thankful for) and wanted me to try physical therapy. I started PT and got treated for my neck and headaches. The funny thing was I had minimal neck pain! My PT mobilized my cervical and thoracic spine and dry needled muscles in my neck and instantly my headaches improved. If you are noticing a pattern of increased headache when you move your neck, or a pattern of increased headache symptoms when your neck feels extra stiff then you may be suffering from cervicogenic headaches. Don’t let this go under the radar and see a physical therapist who can help you today. Come schedule an appointment with Prevent and Restore Physical Therapy today!
