Achilles tendonitis is an overuse injury of the achilles tendon which connects the calf muscles to the heel bone. It commonly develops in adults, especially runners and athletes. It is prevalent in adults aged 30-50. This condition occurs when the tendon becomes inflamed due to excessive strain on the tendon. Often, it is because there is a compensatory pattern of overusing the calf muscles because the glutes and hamstrings (hip extensors) are weak. It is much easier to treat if treated early. If not, it can develop into a tendinopathy which can take months to years to fully recover from. This is a call to action, if you are experiencing pain in your Achilles or in the back of your ankle when walking or running come see a physical therapist today.
